The Gillette City Council has approved five properties within city limits to serve as temporary campgrounds for the upcoming International Pathfinder Camporee.
Earlier this year, the city council enacted a resolution allowing RVs, campers, and tents to be occupied on private property in residential zones from July 31 to August 13. This was a temporary suspension of the usual occupancy rules to accommodate the influx of visitors for the event.
Responding to interest from property owners in commercial and industrial zones, the city extended this provision to all zoning districts. This expansion led to the submission of five applications for temporary campgrounds, all of which the city council approved:
- 2800 Elder Street
- 900 West Second Street (Rockpile Museum)
- 1970 East Sinclair Street
- 1501 Cressett Street
- 1505 Cressett Street
These approvals are strictly temporary, with all properties reverting to their original status after August 13.
Application Requirements
Property owners had to provide detailed plans addressing health and safety concerns. These included:
- Trash pickup and utility services
- Noise management and curfew enforcement
- A site map
- Approval from the Campbell County Fire Department
Specific Concerns
The Rockpile Museum’s proposal, located at 900 West Second Street, stood out due to the lack of restrooms, electricity, and potable water. The plan involves five campers, including two in a truck, one in a camper, and two in a tepee. Councilwoman Trish Simonson highlighted these deficiencies, prompting City Administrator Mike Cole to recommend conditional approval based on resolving the restroom issue.
Community Contributions
The owner of the properties at 1501 and 1505 Cressett Street plans to donate any generated revenue to a local Boy Scout troop, demonstrating community support and involvement.
Guidelines for Residential Areas
Homeowners in residential areas can also apply for temporary campground permits. Their process is more straightforward but must comply with specific guidelines:
- Tents are permitted on private property but must have restroom facilities available.
- Campers, motorhomes, RVs, and tents are prohibited in public right-of-ways, city streets, parks, and other city properties.
- All campers, motorhomes, and RVs must be connected to city utilities, including water, sewer, and electricity.

This initiative aims to accommodate the increased demand for temporary lodging during the International Pathfinder Camporee while ensuring the safety and convenience of all participants and residents.
